A Moody Bedroom & Office Design for a Couple of Repeat Clients

A few weeks ago I spent the day with some clients I've been working with for over six years! This time around they wanted to tackle their primary bedroom and office spaces, and the vibe we were after was: MOODY.

You can see some of their inspo in the above image—earthy, plants, texture, modern, and wood tones were some prime elements they were hoping for.

Their bedroom space was MASSIVE, as you can see above, so we weren't hurting for space. The layout was straightforward and we'd be working with the existing bed frame.

So, we needed new nightstands, lamps, artwork, a mirror, and a new dresser, plus a rug and an end-of-the-bed bench. Here was our plan for the layout:

We knew we were starting with a light upholstered bed, so for our furniture selection, I chose a mix of wood tones, fabrics, and other materials. I brought in some mixed metals between the fan, bedside lamps, and gunmetal on the bench, and grounded the space with a large textural area rug.

In my clients office, we wanted to rework some existing built-ins to give him the office of his dreams. In his inspo below, you can see that he loved the mix of woods, metals, leather and accent lighting:

The space was NOT large, so we had to be creative with our layout. We designed the builtins to fit snuggly around a beautiful sofa that would slide into the space, and chose an L-shaped desk that would maximize working surface.

We planned to color drench the space in a deep blue tone, which perfectly compliments the orangey brown tones in the desk and the leather sofa. We also chose a rug that would bring together the blue and brown/red tones, and accented the space with some nice brass lighting. I rhink he is going to love working in this space!

The Wrap Up

I was really pleased with the way these spaces ultimately came together! And the best part? We were able to create this entire design, which my client can now execute on their own timing, all in a single 5-hour Designed in a Day session.

I find that setting aside this focused, limited amount of time helps my clients to get really clear on their desires and come to our session very prepared. It also lends to quicker decision making, along with coming up with some very creative solutions.

My clients left this session with a fully customized design plan.

This included the style boards for each room to showcase how the pieces will work together, along with PDFs of the layouts so they know how to set everything up when they arrive, as well as links to the individual items where they are able to source the items I've suggested.

Came across this following a recommendation in a Montreal UI/UX design subreddit past eleven in the evening. What held my attention was a thoughtful piece covering casino chances mixed with practical feedback on data table striped row contrast and alternating background intensity in the CA interface.
