A Little Boy's Bedroom Design + Two More Kids Spaces

I had a great first designed in a day session last week after taking a little break this summer! The goal was to finish out three kids spaces: a bedroom for a two year old, a large open play area, and a second bedroom slash additional kids play room.

Let's jump in!

The Kids Spaces Before

From left to right, we have our main bedroom for the kiddo, then the large open landing that functions as a play area, followed by another bedroom, which will be used as an additional playroom slash kids guest bedroom.

Bright room with a dresser, a window seat with cushions, and a view of trees and water outside. Neutral tones and a cozy atmosphere.

The Planned Furniture Layout

In the main bedroom, I moved the bed to the back wall to give the daybed and the trundle bed some space. That allowed a spot for a dresser, and I chose something with round sides to minimize all the odd angles in the room. Lastly, I added in an upholstered storage bench with a mirror above on the last remaining wall.

In the second bedroom / additional kids play area, I chose two long, low open storage shelves for toys/books etc, a small kids play table, and two small round poufs that also have storage inside. Lastly, we used the existing kids armchair in the little opening between the built in daybed and the storage shelves.

In the large play area, my client's main priority was adding a lot of storage, but keeping most of the area open for running around and all the larger toy items they still would keep in there.

Beneath the window, I planned for a long run of open storage that would have a couple lamps on top but mostly open surface area for play things, and then we added a storage bench with some art, so that an adult would have a place to perch when playing with the kids,

Design Inspiration

My client had selected inspiration with lots of green, blue, plaid, and whimsical themes. She wanted something that would grow with her two year old for a few years, and that felt warm and woody.

She liked montessori style toys and storage, and also liked the idea of a trundle bed since they'd often host their nieces and nephews.

Little Boys Bedroom Design Plan

Between the dresser and the trundle in her inspiration, my client had a nice start to the design. I don't personally carry a lot of childrens furniture pieces, so I utilized a lot of pottery barn kids, crate & kids, etc. These places had LOTS of great stuff for a little boy's bedroom design.

Using those two pieces as the base, I added in accessories like artwork, lamps, and pillows, selected the bedding, and chose the storage bench and mirror. We also planned for a couple wall mounted book shelves to go beside the bed on the closet door wall. Also - how stinking cute is this hamper??

Additional Kid's Play Room Design Plan

In the kids playroom, I opted for green on the storage shelves since they would take up the largest visual space in the room, and balanced that with some wood elements in the kids table and mirror. I brought in some brown with the pillows, throw, and pouf, and ultimately tied this color paletee directly into the main bedroom to help the area feel cohesive.

Behind the little table, I'd imagined some type of activity wall. I found these on Etsy, where there were lots of different colors and configurations available. These are so cute that it doesn't particularly matter once they outgrow the activities since they make a cute little piece of artwork!

Storage and Seating Options for Large Open Play Room

Finally, in the large open kids play area, I thought it would be nice to install a sculptural light fixture in the center to help this room feel more architecturally interesting. I used light wood for the storage area, which fit well with the house as a whole, and brought in some playful green with these funky little lamps.

Since a lot of the kids larger toy items were very bright and primary colors (red, blue, yellow) I chose artwork that was textural and interesting but that wouldn't clash with those items. Then, for the storage bench, I chose a desaturated olive tone.

We also considered that eventually this might be where the kids do homework when they are older, so we chose a modular storage option that has a desk option that they could add down the road.

The Wrap Up

All in all, this space came together beautifully! And the best part? We were able to create this entire design, which my clients could then execute on their own timing, all in a single 5-hour session.

I find that setting aside this focused, limited amount of time helps my clients to get really clear on their desires and come to our session very prepared. It also lends to quicker decision making, along with coming up with some very creative solutions.

My clients left this session with a fully customized design plan.

This included the style boards for each room to showcase how the pieces will work together, along with PDFs of the layouts so they know how to set everything up when they arrive, as well as links to the individual items where they are able to source the items I've suggested.
