A Dining, Living, and Game Area for a Historic Heritage Hill Home

This week I visited some clients just a few blocks from my old house in Grand Rapids, Michigan! The hundred year old historic homes in this neighborhood are full of charm and character, and we had a tricky layout on our agenda!

The main space we were tackling included a living room and dining room, however the living room had a long narrow footprint. The room likely had been split into two in the original floorplan, and at some point had been opened into a larger room.

Below you can see the existing layout of the two spaces in this historic home:

As I am wont to do, I forgot to take "before" photos on site...but here are some photos from the house listing from back in 2014 — the space looks pretty different now, but the layout has remained pretty much the same, so you'll get the picture.

Below you can see the images my client pulled for style inspiration. The walls in the dining room are now red, so we wanted to design around that. Overall, she wanted to lighten up the wood tones in the space and make it feel bright and cozy. She liked big comfy chairs that invite you to plop down with a book, and she loves puzzles, so we wanted to incorporate a puzzle table as well.

For our layout, we wanted to maximize seating, so we went with a sofa with chaise plus to accent chairs in the living room. The game table would seat four, and then we't tuck a big comfy reading chair in the top right corner.

The dining room was straight forward, as most formal dining rooms are. We chose an trestle style extension table, and added a larger sideboard for dish storage at the back.

We kept the color pallette warm and neutral with some darker contrasts of olive and burnt orange. To tie in the the red, we chose a green tone rug, which is a comploimentary color of red, but keeping it more sagey helps avoid a christmas look.

The sofa and chair are custom pieces from interior define, and everything else was curated via the LFID trade platform we use. You can see the individual items all here!

For hte dining room, we came up with two variations utilizing the same table as a base. The first includes a muted green sideboard with a combo of drawers and doors, paired with a natrual wood upholstered dining chair:

The second pulls the green element into the chair fabric and pairs that with a simpler sideboard with cane doors:
