HOW LONG DOES A DESIGN PROJECT TAKE?
All projects are different in size, scope, and complexity. We allow a minimum of seven weeks from the signing of our agreement to project presentation. Custom furniture takes anywhere from 8-14 weeks once ordered, and construction timelines are dependent on the availability and timeline of the general contractor managing your project.
WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS DO YOU TAKE ON?
We have three tiers of design services, which can be applied to most types of projects. Space-wise, we design anything from a single room to a whole house, kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, great rooms, basements, sunrooms, offices and retail spaces, and more. If you have a commercial space that has a more residential feel, we may consider the project as well.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO THINK ABOUT SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT?
We take on just a handful of clients per year and are often scheduled several weeks out, so its best to plan ahead. We schedule client appointments between 10am - 5pm Monday through Friday.
The earlier you can get started the better! The design process takes a minimum of seven weeks, and if your project involves construction, most builders are scheduled months out, so we like to get on their project list as early as possible.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR A PROJECT DISCOVERY MEETING?
We will get the most out of your discovery meeting if you do the following prep work:
-Complete our project intake form here.
-Have a good understanding of your project scope: Which spaces will we be discussing? What do you want to accomplish in these spaces? Are there any wish list items?
-Think about the functions of all the spaces involved. How will you use each space?
-Create inspiration boards of images on Pinterest/Houzz for each of the spaces, and know what you like/dislike about these images.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG? AND HOW DO YOU RESOLVE IT?
Every project has it’s issues! Accomplishing a polished design involves working with multiple vendors, manufacturers, contractors, and more. There will always things that go awry—items get miss-quoted, a light comes in the wrong finish, something doesn’t show up when planned—but know that we are here to handle it! We’ll do everything we can to make sure the issues are taken care of, and you can rest easy knowing we will do what it takes to bring you a beautifully completed project.
DO YOU GO SHOPPING WITH CLIENTS?
We don't go shopping with our clients, however, we do bring a combination of samples and tear sheets of all products, finishes, and fabrics to our presentation so clients get a true sense of how the colors and textures will work together in their space.
WHAT’S A HEALTHY BUDGET TO FURNISH AND DECORATE A ROOM? HOW ABOUT KITCHENS AND BATHS?
While every project is different, here are a few rough suggestions to consider based on our previous projects...
Great Room: $25,000+

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL COST OF A KITCHEN RENOVATION?
As a rule of thumb for a full-gut kitchen renovation, you can plan to spend around 20% of the value of your home.
CAN I USE MY EXISTING FURNITURE?
In many cases, we do utilize a client’s existing furniture, as well as special family pieces, artwork, or sentimental items. We'll be upfront if we do not believe an existing piece will work in the design of the space.
DO YOU DO WORK OUTSIDE OF GRAND RAPIDS?
We do! Our main focus lies in west and southeast Michigan, however, we will travel farther or out of state for the right project. Design projects outside of our local area require additional travel fees and special scheduling.
HOW INVOLVED ARE YOUR CLIENTS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS?
For full-service design, clients are very involved on the front end of a project in laying out their vision, goals, style, and needed function for the space(s). We ask a lot of questions, look at numerous photos together, and do the work we need to do to develop a solid understanding of what you are looking for. After that, the nitty-gritty of the design process happens behind the scenes and culminates in a presentation of your entire design, including all estimates for all furnishings, where the client gives final approval on all our selections.
WHAT ARE YOUR DESIGN FEES?
Short answer: every project is different!
Full-Service projects start with a discovery meeting, which is $497 for up to two hours. Following our consultation, we’ll compile a proposal outlining our services, project scope, and estimated fee for the design phase of the project. For full-service projects, we work within a flat-fee, project-based structure, which starts at $4,997.
