A Not-Stuffy But Also Not-Sloppy Living Room Design For Two New Empty Nesters

Updated: Mar 30

Larry and I spent a two lovely days in Grand Rapids a few weekends back after a very fun Designed in a Day session I had that Friday. I love when I'm able to combine both work + fun on my trips to Grand Rapids!

We met up with friends, hit up a few Art Prize venues, drank delicious cocktails, and enjoyed the absolutely gorgeous weather 😎 ☀️

So, this particular DIAD session was for a new-to-empty-nesting couple, and they wanted to finally, at long last, update their living room furniture. Their previous pieces were a leather material, very much well loved (aka destroyed 😂) by kids and previous pets.

My clients host a LOT of gatherings (in fact, the husband was hosting a “Scotch Circle” while the wife and I worked on the living room design—how fun?!), and she shared that she wanted the space to feel put-together and neat, without feeling stuffy (not-stuffy-but-not-sloppy!).

She said:

“I want people to feel like they can sit on the furniture and not be worried that they're going to ruin anything.”

I feel that! So, we came up with a nice solution that utilized two contrasting sofas, her existing accent chairs, and some new accessories to center around their fireplace wall and built-ins.

Here's what we came up with for the Living Room Design:

Thanks for hanging out with me here!

XOXO, Lauren
